Dozens of Utah Mormon Congregation Members Suffer Carbon Monoxide Poisoning During Church Service

Over 50 members of a Utah Mormon Congregation experienced symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning during a church service this past weekend. While 54 members reported symptoms, only 49 required treatment, according to NBC News. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints suspects a malfunction with the building’s heating system as the cause. The church has stated that the building will remain closed until the issue is fully resolved.

The church expressed concern for the well-being of those affected and is providing support for medical expenses. Details about the specific symptoms were not disclosed, but at least 22 individuals were immediately hospitalized after the incident. It began when a 4-year-old girl reported breathing difficulties, followed by a man feeling sick, and another person experiencing a headache upon leaving the building.

Located in Monroe, central Utah, the meetinghouse is nearly 200 miles south of Salt Lake City. The local fire department confirmed the carbon monoxide leak and ordered an evacuation. However, there were not enough ambulances available to transport all the individuals reporting symptoms. As a result, neighboring counties were called in to assist.

The church has not provided a timeline for when the building will be deemed safe for use again. The incident highlights the importance of carbon monoxide detection and prevention measures to ensure the safety of congregants during religious gatherings.
