At least 30 people have been reported dead after a massive earthquake hit the coast of central Japan on New Year’s Day. Evacuations have taken place across nine prefectures, with nearly 100,000 people seeking refuge in sports halls and school gymnasiums. Power outages and water shortages persist in affected areas.
