A heartbreaking incident occurred earlier this month when a U.S. Army veteran, John Dyer, tragically lost his life on his 26th birthday. Dyer, also known as Jack, was riding his motorcycle on U.S. Highway 27 when he lost control and fell off the vehicle at approximately 6:30 p.m. on December 17. According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), Dyer landed in the center southbound travel lane and was struck by eight vehicles. Unfortunately, none of the drivers saw him, leading to his untimely death at the scene.
Jack’s father, John, expressed his devastation and referred to the ordeal as a “nightmare” in an interview with FOX 35. He questioned how all the vehicles could have continued running over his son without noticing him. “He’s not a deer in the road, he is a human being,” John emphasized. The grieving father also shared that he and his wife had wished Jack a happy birthday through text messages but never received a response. Jack’s mother had left him a voicemail as well.
The news of Jack’s passing was delivered to his family by two police officers who came to their door, leaving them in shock. “It’s devastating, I didn’t know how to tell my wife,” John recalled. Despite being initially afraid of heights, Jack served as a paratrooper and overcame his fears. He was born in Russia and later adopted by his family, residing in New York before eventually moving to Florida. Jack was described as someone who lived life to the fullest, even taking up surfing in Montauk, Long Island, despite his initial fear of water.
John reflected on the notion that God determines one’s time on Earth, stating, “God doesn’t tell us when we have a full life. You can have a full life when you are one month old or a full life when you’re 99. God chose Jack’s time. He didn’t ask me, that’s for sure.”
This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of road safety. The loss of a young veteran like Jack is a devastating blow to his family and loved ones. May he rest in peace.
