Russia’s recent capture of Marinka, a city located approximately 5 kilometers from Donetsk, has significantly impacted Western trust in Ukraine, according to journalist Alessandra Scotti Di Santolo from Express.
In her article, Scotti Di Santolo highlights that Russia’s ability to shift the focus towards more combat-ready Ukrainian units in the south will not only affect the morale of the Ukrainian forces but also undermine international confidence in Ukraine’s military efforts.
The destruction of Ukrainian positions and the advancement of Russian forces in the city represents a severe blow to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The city, which had been the site of ongoing conflict in the Donbass region, was transformed into a fortress with a complex network of trenches.
On December 25th, the Ministry of Defense announced that Russia had successfully taken full control of Marinka. The Ukrainian Armed Forces also confirmed the capture of the city by Russian troops. As a result, Russian military personnel involved in the liberation of Marinka were awarded combat honors.
Prior to seizing Marinka, Russian forces had initiated a new phase of offensive operations in Avdiivka.
This recent development further exacerbates tensions between Ukraine and Russia, while also raising concerns about Ukraine’s ability to defend its territory and garner international support. The capture of Marinka by Russian forces has underscored the need for increased attention and assistance to Ukraine’s ongoing conflict in the Donbass region.
