Former Assistant U.S. Attorney Denies Politics Played a Role in Hunter Biden Investigation, Refuses to Answer Questions in Closed-Door Interview

In a closed-door interview with the House Judiciary Committee, former Assistant U.S. Attorney Lesley Wolf denied that politics influenced the investigation into Hunter Biden, according to a transcript reviewed by Digital. Wolf, who recently left the Justice Department, testified that she would not be able to answer most of the questions due to the ongoing federal criminal investigation. The interview took place after the Justice Department negotiated terms with the committee.

During the interview, Chairman Jim Jordan stated that Wolf “refused to answer most of our questions” and attributed it to instructions she received from the Justice Department. IRS whistleblowers Gary Shapley and Joseph Ziegler alleged earlier this year that Wolf worked to limit questioning related to President Biden and apparent references to Biden as “dad” or “the big guy.” However, the transcript review did not reveal any questions about that specific allegation.

Wolf emphasized that her decisions as a federal prosecutor were guided by principles of justice and fairness and were not influenced by politics. She expressed frustration at not being able to provide detailed answers, citing her legal obligations and the ongoing nature of the investigation. Wolf stated that she followed the facts and made decisions in the best interests of the investigation, considering various factors such as politically sensitive investigations and professional conduct rules.

Shapley also claimed that Wolf reviewed an affidavit for a search warrant of Hunter Biden’s residence and agreed that probable cause had been achieved. However, she ultimately did not allow a physical search warrant on the president’s son. Shapley alleged that Wolf’s decision was based on “optics” rather than the evidence. Additionally, Wolf was accused of tipping off Hunter Biden’s legal team ahead of a planned search of his storage unit.

Wolf’s testimony is part of the House impeachment inquiry against President Biden, led by House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Jason Smith, Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, and Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer. The investigation focuses on the alleged politicization of the federal probe into Hunter Biden, as well as the Biden family’s foreign business dealings and potential involvement or benefits received by the president.

President Biden has repeatedly denied any involvement in his son’s business dealings. Hunter Biden was also subpoenaed as part of the inquiry but defied his subpoena, instead making a public statement on Capitol Hill. House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer and House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan have threatened to hold Hunter Biden in contempt of Congress.

Recently, Hunter Biden was charged with federal income tax evasion and false tax reporting by Special Counsel David Weiss. He pleaded not guilty and his attorneys are working to dismiss the charges. The president’s son also faces federal gun charges in Delaware.

The ongoing investigation and testimony from key figures like Lesley Wolf continue to shed light on the complex and politically charged nature of the Hunter Biden probe. As the House gathers evidence and considers potential articles of impeachment, the focus remains on uncovering the truth behind the allegations and determining the extent of any wrongdoing.
