A disturbing incident unfolded in Sebring, Florida, where a 39-year-old man, Richard Myron Ham, was shot dead by deputies after allegedly attempting to burn a 9-year-old boy he believed was possessed by a demon. The incident occurred on Tuesday when firefighters responded to reports of a burning pile of debris on Bay Blossom Drive. Authorities deemed the situation suspicious and called for the assistance of deputies.
Upon arrival, deputies encountered Ham armed with two metal rods. Despite their orders, Ham refused to comply, prompting deputies to use a Taser on him. However, the Taser had no effect as Ham pulled out the probes from his body and re-armed himself with one of the bars. Shockingly, he swung the metal rod and struck a deputy in the head.
In response to the attack, another deputy opened fire, ultimately fatally shooting Ham. He was rushed to the hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after. The injured deputy received treatment at another hospital and was later released.
Further investigation revealed that Ham and 30-year-old Lakenya Phillips, who was also present at the scene, believed that Phillips’ 9-year-old son was possessed by a demon. Witnesses reported seeing Ham placing the child into the fire and covering him with a burning blanket. Fortunately, the child was able to escape the flames and avoid serious injury.
Authorities discovered that Phillips and the boy were listed as missing and endangered in Wichita, Kansas on December 6. It remains unclear why they came to Highlands County. During a search of Ham and Phillips’ vehicle, multiple firearms and drugs were found, although details were not provided.
Ham had a criminal history that included previous arrests and convictions for armed felonies and drug possession in Arkansas, South Carolina, and Georgia. The incident is currently under investigation.
