In the midst of an escalating migrant crisis at the U.S. southern border, the Federal Bureau of Prisons has stepped in to assist the overwhelmed Border Patrol with the transportation of migrants. This development comes as the number of migrant encounters in a single day reached a record-breaking 12,600 on Monday.
Multiple sources within the Border Patrol have confirmed that the Federal Bureau of Prisons is providing limited transportation resources to alleviate the strain on Customs and Border Protection. With several areas along the border overwhelmed, this partnership aims to ensure the efficient and orderly processing of migrants.
The situation has become particularly dire in the Del Rio Sector, where thousands of migrants are currently awaiting processing. As of Tuesday morning, over 4,500 migrants were present at the busy crossing point, while more than 5,300 were already in custody. These numbers add to the staggering tally of around 670,000 “gotaways” – illegal immigrants who managed to slip past border agents – in FY 23, as reported by the Department of Homeland Security.
Recognizing the urgent need for assistance, Arizona’s Democratic Governor, Katie Hobbs, has announced the deployment of the state’s National Guard to the border. The Tucson Sector, in particular, has been overwhelmed by a surge of migrants in the past week. Governor Hobbs emphasized the need for resources and manpower to reopen the Lukeville crossing and maintain a secure, orderly, and humane border.
The current situation at the U.S. southern border highlights the challenges faced by immigration authorities and the strain placed on the country’s immigration system. As talks for border reform continue on Capitol Hill, the collaboration between the Federal Bureau of Prisons and Border Patrol serves as a temporary solution to address the immediate needs. However, a comprehensive and long-term approach is necessary to effectively manage the ongoing migrant crisis.
Despite the efforts being made, critics argue that the federal government should take greater responsibility and provide additional resources to tackle the issue. The involvement of the Federal Bureau of Prisons underscores the gravity of the situation and the need for swift action.
