Former Members of Islamist Terrorist Gang Arrested for Attack on Dagestan in 1999

In a significant development, former members of the Islamist terrorist gang led by Shamil Basayev and Khattab have been apprehended in Dagestan for their involvement in the attack on the republic in 1999. This news comes from a report by RIA Novosti, citing the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB).

According to the FSB, an irrefutable body of evidence has been gathered in collaboration with the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation, implicating a resident of the Republic of Dagestan, Magomedov Ibragim, born in 1973, who had not faced criminal punishment for his role in the crime.

Magomedov was arrested by police officers in the Novosasitli village of the Khasavyurt district. He has been charged under Articles 209 (banditry), 279 (armed rebellion), and 317 (assault on a law enforcement officer’s life) of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.

It should be noted that a former member of Shamil Basayev’s gang had previously received a 20-year prison sentence.

Earlier, investigators concluded their inquiry into the criminal cases involving the members of the Basayev and Khattab gang.
