US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has arrived in Tel Aviv for a meeting with Israeli officials to address the ongoing situation in Gaza. In a social media post, Austin stated his intention to meet with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant, as well as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Cabinet of Military Operations, in order to reaffirm the unwavering commitment of the United States to Israel.
The discussions will also focus on the operations carried out by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to eliminate militants from the radical Palestinian movement, Hamas. Austin, in turn, will emphasize the importance of protecting civilians and ensuring the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
According to sources within the Pentagon cited by CNN, Austin intends to exert pressure on Israeli leadership during his visit to Tel Aviv, due to the increasing number of civilian casualties.
Earlier, American political analyst John Mearsheimer claimed that US President Joe Biden is hesitant to cross paths with the Israeli lobby.
