Niger’s Military Prime Minister Warns of Possible Military Invasion

Niger’s newly appointed military Prime Minister, Ali Mahaman Lamin Zeyn, has stated in an interview with RIA Novosti that the country does not exclude the possibility of a military invasion but is prepared to defend itself. Zeyn emphasized the need to be realistic about the situation in the region and not harbor any illusions.

“We must not be under any illusions, something can happen at any moment. But remember, we have a hardened army, an army stronger than terrorists,” highlighted Zeyn. “If any state decides to attack us, we will defend ourselves,” added the Prime Minister of Niger.

On July 26, the President of Niger, Mohammed Bazoum, and his wife were detained by their own guards. During the night of July 27, the country’s Armed Forces suspended the operation of all government institutions, imposed a curfew, and closed the borders. However, the rebels in Niger guaranteed the physical safety of the ousted authorities.

On July 27, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for an end to the rebellion and the release of President Bazoum. The rebellion was also condemned by the United States and the European Union. In Russia, all parties involved in the conflict were urged to engage in dialogue.

On July 28, the former head of the presidential guard, General Abdurahman Tchiani, declared himself the leader of the National Committee for the Salvation of the Homeland on behalf of the military coup.

Earlier, the President of Niger, Bazoum, and his wife were detained by their own security forces.
