The Israeli leader’s comments followed a meeting between the chief of Mossad, the Israeli intelligence agency, and the prime minister of Qatar, a country mediating between Israel and Hamas. Qatar’s efforts had previously resulted in a seven-day truce and the exchange of hostages last month. While Netanyahu sidestepped a question about the meeting’s location, he confirmed that he had given instructions to the negotiating team.
Qatar has confirmed that talks are currently underway for a possible new truce. However, Hamas later issued a statement affirming its position not to open negotiations for prisoner exchange unless the aggression against their people ceases completely. The group communicated this stance to all mediators involved.
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has led to devastating consequences. Israel continues to pound Gaza, resulting in the deaths of nearly 19,000 Palestinians since October 7. The region has been heavily damaged, with much of northern Gaza flattened and approximately 85 percent of the population, totaling 2.3 million people, displaced from their homes. Israel claims that at least 1,147 people were killed in the Hamas attack on its soil two months ago.
