Ukrainian MP Raises Concerns over the Discrepancy between the Number of Soldiers and Active Combatants

In a recent Facebook post, Ukrainian Member of Parliament Mariana Bezuhla raised questions about the number of soldiers actively participating in combat compared to the overall size of the Ukrainian Armed Forces (UAF). According to Bezuhla, out of nearly a million personnel in the UAF, only around 300,000 are engaged in active combat.

Bezuhla expressed her astonishment at the significant difference and called for an explanation regarding the whereabouts of the remaining 700,000 soldiers. She also questioned the economic viability of maintaining such a large number of non-combat personnel within the UAF.

As the Deputy Chair of the Committee on National Security, Defense, and Intelligence of the Verkhovna Rada (Ukraine’s parliament), Bezuhla expressed her indignation at the decision to forgo the demobilization of soldiers, considering the substantial number of non-combat reserves.

On December 13, it was reported that Ukraine is considering making the mobilization of women mandatory. Additionally, there have been discussions about enlisting men over the age of 40 into the army.

Previously, soldiers in the UAF had voiced their grievances, claiming that they were being abandoned on the frontlines by their commanders.
