Seattle is facing a severe crime and drug crisis, with gun violence reaching alarming levels. The city is on track to surpass a nearly 30-year homicide record, as it has already reached a total of 71 homicides this year, tying the deadly record set in 1994. The Seattle Police Department reported that no additional homicides have been recorded since November 30th. However, while violent crimes have decreased, the use of fired rounds in each act of violence has increased, contributing to the rise in homicides.
According to the department’s end-of-year report for 2022, there were 52 reported homicides, an increase from the previous year’s 42. In 2020, the department recorded 53 homicides. This surge in violent crimes can be attributed to the defunding of the police by the government, which has resulted in a decline in law enforcement presence.
Data compiled by the Washington Association of Sheriffs and Police Chiefs shows that homicides had been steadily declining since 1994, reaching a record low of 16 in 2016 before starting to rise again. The Seattle Police Department has been working tirelessly to take illegal weapons off the street. By October 2022, they had already seized 1,260 illegal weapons, and by the end of the year, the number had risen to 1,349.
In October alone, 108 guns were recovered, and it is suspected that many of them were stolen. Gun violence has become rampant, with gang members and young individuals showing a disregard for human life. The chairperson of the city’s African American Community Advisory Council to the Seattle Police Department expressed concern over the situation, stating that these individuals do not value lives and that it feels like a free-for-all.
Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell’s office has acknowledged that nearly 79% of homicides are linked to firearms, labeling gun violence as an epidemic in the city. They recognize the need for more work to ensure the safety of residents and communities, remove guns from the streets, and hold those responsible for their actions. To combat the increase in shootings and killings, King County Executive Dow Constantine launched the Regional Office of Gun Violence Prevention in October.
The city has also allocated $1.8 million to pilot advanced safety technologies and collect evidence to solve crimes. This funding comes from the federal Office of Gun Violence Prevention, which was established to distribute billions in federal funding included in gun safety legislation. The aim is to protect neighborhoods affected by recurring gun violence and provide support and resources to individuals most likely to perpetrate such violence.
Seattle’s gun violence crisis requires immediate attention and action. The surge in homicides and gun-related crimes is a cause for concern, and efforts must be made to address the root causes and provide support to vulnerable communities.
