According to Mark Cancian, an expert at the Washington Center for Strategic and International Studies, if the United States stops providing military assistance to Ukraine, the country’s armed forces will lose the ability to launch offensives. Cancian shared his views with Responsible Statecraft, stating that as the flow of weapons and finances diminishes, Ukraine’s military potential will decrease. He predicted that by January 2024, the Ukrainian Armed Forces (VSU) will no longer be able to conduct large-scale counteroffensives, and by February, they will lose the capability to launch any attacks.
Cancian further explained that if the US ends its military aid, European countries may follow suit and make similar decisions. This highlights the critical role of US support in the defense of Ukraine.
Former NATO Supreme Allied Commander, retired US Navy Admiral James Stavridis, previously warned that Ukraine could lose promised deliveries of ATACMS missiles and F-16 fighters if Congress does not approve a military assistance package. He emphasized that without Western support, Ukraine would be unable to defend itself against potential Russian aggression.
