The US Air Force is set to undergo a massive overhaul of its nuclear missile system with the introduction of the Sentinel, a new intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). However, there are concerns about the outdated aspects of the Cold War-era Minuteman missiles that the Sentinel will replace. While modernizing the silo-launched missile with complex software and 21st-century connectivity is necessary, it also presents new vulnerabilities, particularly in terms of cyberattacks and extreme winter temperatures in the Western states where the silos are located.

The Minuteman III, which has been in service since 1962, relied on hard-wired communication systems buried underground for its operators to receive messages from the missile. The new Sentinel will operate within a closed network, but additional security measures are being implemented to ensure effective operation in a cyber-contested environment.
In terms of maintenance, the extreme winter conditions in the missile fields pose challenges for new technology. Crews have found that the old manual tracking methods may still be more efficient in frigid temperatures. Additionally, attempts to introduce RFID technology for tracking maintenance items created security vulnerabilities, highlighting the advantages of analog systems in terms of hacking prevention.
Despite technological advancements, one critical aspect of missile launch remains unchanged – the human element. Teams of missileers will continue to validate orders and activate launches, emphasizing the importance of human decision-making in critical situations.
