Texas police have apprehended a suspect in the murder of 16-year-old Lizbeth Medina, who was found dead in her apartment on December 5. The Edna Police Department announced on Sunday that Rafael Govea Romero, an undocumented male, has been arrested for capital murder. Officials believe Romero is responsible for Lizbeth’s death.
The arrest brings relief to the community, who were shocked by Lizbeth’s murder. The Edna community can now feel a sense of peace knowing that the suspect is in custody. Lizbeth’s mother, Jacqueline Medina, expressed her lack of familiarity with the suspect and is waiting for more information from the police.
According to Jacqueline Medina, she came home on Tuesday evening to find her daughter dead in the bathtub. She had not seen or heard from Lizbeth that afternoon and grew concerned. After searching for her, Jacqueline discovered Lizbeth’s lifeless body in the bathtub. Lizbeth had been sick the previous Monday and did not attend school on Tuesday. Friends and family initially assumed her absence was due to her illness.
Jacqueline, who recently moved to Texas from Nebraska for work, described Lizbeth as an amazing and caring girl. She wants people to remember her daughter for the impact she made on others’ lives and not for the tragic way she was taken from them. The Medina family has started a GoFundMe campaign titled “Justice for Lizbeth Medina” to support their efforts in finding the suspected killer.
The arrest of Rafael Govea Romero came after the Edna Police Department released security camera footage of a person of interest in the case. The community is relieved knowing that progress is being made in seeking justice for Lizbeth’s murder.
