A Miami-Dade Police Department officer, Miguel Lomeli, is facing armed sexual battery, armed burglary, and kidnapping charges after an altercation with his ex-girlfriend. The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on Wednesday when Lomeli allegedly confronted his ex-girlfriend outside her home, forcibly took her inside, and sexually assaulted her. Later that day, Lomeli turned himself in at the Miami-Dade PD headquarters in Doral.
Miami-Dade Police Director Stephanie V. Daniels expressed her concern over the allegations, stating that there is no place for betrayal of public trust within the department. Immediate action has been taken to hold Officer Lomeli accountable. Lomeli appeared before Judge Cindy Glazer on Thursday morning, where he was ordered to stay away from his ex-girlfriend. The judge also granted him time to find a lawyer before setting his bond.
According to an arrest warrant obtained by a local NBC station, the dispute between Lomeli and his ex-girlfriend began at a restaurant in Homestead. The victim, a 36-year-old woman, reported that Lomeli followed her home in his marked police vehicle, wearing his uniform and carrying his duty weapon.
During the altercation, the victim yelled at her 12-year-old son to call for help, prompting Lomeli to flee the scene. Miami-Dade Police Department promptly arrested Lomeli when he turned himself in at their headquarters.
Lomeli has been employed with the Miami-Dade police for six years. Miami Herald reports that the department emphasizes the importance of maintaining the integrity of their police force and acting with the highest standards to safeguard the trust of the county residents.
