Gunman Attacks University of Nevada, Las Vegas Campus, Leaving Multiple Victims

A tragic shooting took place at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) on Wednesday, leaving three people dead and one critically wounded. The gunman, who died in a shootout with police, was identified as a former professor who had previously worked at East Carolina University in North Carolina. The shooter had reportedly sought a job at UNLV but was unsuccessful.

Law enforcement sources, speaking on the condition of anonymity, revealed that the shooter opened fire on the fourth floor of UNLV’s Lee Business School. Students and faculty quickly followed the “Run-Hide-Fight” guidance as the shooter moved through several floors of the building. Two university police detectives ultimately confronted and killed the gunman outside the building.

This incident marks the deadliest shooting in Las Vegas since the tragic 2017 attack at the Mandalay Bay casino. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff Kevin McMahill commended the swift response of the officers, stating that their actions potentially saved many lives.

Authorities have not yet released the identities of the victims, the motive behind the attack, or the weapons used. Witnesses reported hearing approximately 20 shots during the incident.

In response to the shooting, UNLV President Keith E. Whitfield expressed deep sorrow and offered support to the victims and their families. The university has canceled classes and activities through the weekend, and a basketball game scheduled in Ohio was also canceled.

Whitfield emphasized that mental health support services and counseling are available for students and staff. The university is fully cooperating with law enforcement as the investigation into the shooting continues.

The community has rallied together in the face of tragedy, with numerous first responders and medical personnel demonstrating bravery and dedication. Their immediate response reflects the strength and resilience of the UNLV community.

This devastating incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for increased security measures on campuses and the importance of mental health support services in educational institutions.
