Russia Sets Date for Presidential Elections in 2024

Moscow, December 7 – The Federation Council has scheduled presidential elections for March 17, 2024. The resolution was unanimously approved by the chamber, and its text is available for review. “Appoint the presidential elections of the Russian Federation for March 17, 2024. This resolution shall enter into force on the day of its official publication,” the document states. The appointment of the head of state elections falls under the exclusive powers of the Federation Council according to the Constitution.

Valentina Matviyenko, the speaker of the chamber, stated that this decision marks the start of the pre-election campaign. She emphasized that the upcoming elections are a crucial political event that will largely determine Russia’s development trajectory. Ella Pamfilova, the Chairperson of the Central Election Commission (CEC), expressed gratitude to the senators for their decision. “Thank you for providing the necessary legislative framework to ensure the elections are conducted properly. The upcoming elections will serve as a guarantee for Russia’s development and its victory in this relentless geopolitical battle,” she said during the session.

The CEC Chairperson also mentioned that the possibility of a three-day voting period is being considered. The procedure for elections in the new regions will be approved by the CEC after consultations with the Federal Security Service (FSB), the Ministry of Defense, and the governors.
