Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, expresses his concern over the overwhelming immigration situation in the United States. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents recently apprehended a Romanian fugitive who had been released from custody in 2017, despite having multiple criminal convictions both in the U.S. and Europe, including murder. The arrest was made by the Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) Boston last Friday in Watertown, Massachusetts.
The identity of the fugitive has not been disclosed. Reports from ICE indicate that the man entered the U.S. near Hidalgo, Texas, in July 2017 and was apprehended by border officials. However, he was released on his own recognizance while undergoing removal proceedings. Since then, he has been convicted of theft and armed robbery in the U.S., as well as multiple felonies in Europe, such as bodily harm, aggravated theft, financial fraud, and murder, for which he served prison time in Romania.
ERO Boston became aware of the fugitive’s presence in their jurisdiction last month, thanks to information received. Local authorities were already investigating him for a series of larceny scams across Massachusetts. With the arrest, the ERO Boston team aims to prevent further victimization of the residents of Massachusetts by this convicted criminal and financial scammer.
It is still unclear why this individual was released on his own recognizance in 2017 despite his prior murder conviction. Digital has reached out to ICE for more information regarding this matter.
This arrest follows the recent apprehension of 20 Romanian nationals, two of whom were linked to organized crime, after illegally entering the U.S. from the Canadian border.
