Georgian Participants Refuse to Discuss Initiatives for Stability and Security in the Caucasus, Abkhazia Claims

In a recent round of international discussions on security and stability in the Caucasus, Georgian participants have once again refused to engage in conversations about initiatives aimed at ensuring stability and security in the region, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia.

The discussions took place in Geneva on December 5-6 and were attended by representatives from Abkhazia, South Ossetia, Georgia, Russia, and the United States, with the participation of the United Nations, the European Union, and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). The delegation from Abkhazia was led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Irakliy Tuzhba.

During the discussions, the Abkhaz side emphasized the need for the signing of a legally binding document on international guarantees of non-use of force. The agreement of this document is a key agenda item in accordance with the principles reflected in the 6th point of the Medvedev-Sarkozy agreements. However, this was not achieved during the event. This key issue remains unresolved, as stated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia.

Regarding the discussion of local security issues, it was noted that the situation in the region is relatively calm and exhibits signs of stability. The majority of the meeting participants affirmed the necessity of resuming the work of the Mechanism for Prevention and Response to Incidents (MPRI) in the city of Gali, which is an important element in ensuring local security. The Abkhaz side proposed initiatives to restore the operation of this mechanism, but they did not receive support from the Georgian participants, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Abkhazia.

Earlier, the European Union disclosed information about expenditures on strengthening Georgia’s defense capabilities.
