Double Stabbing at Philadelphia Macy’s Leaves One Dead and Another Injured; Suspect Charged with Multiple Crimes

A tragic incident unfolded at a Macy’s department store in Philadelphia, where two unarmed security guards were stabbed, resulting in the death of one guard and severe injuries to the other. The suspect, identified as Tyrone Garcell Tunnell, has been arrested and is facing multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder, aggravated assault, and retail theft.

The victim who lost his life in the attack has been identified as Eric Harrison, a 27-year-old man who was stabbed in the neck and pronounced dead at Jefferson Hospital. The other victim, a 23-year-old, sustained stab wounds to his face and arm and is currently in critical but stable condition after undergoing surgery.

The Philadelphia Police Department swiftly launched an investigation into the incident and provided details about what transpired. The altercation began when Tunnell allegedly attempted to steal hats from the store. The security guards confronted him, retrieved the merchandise, and allowed him to leave. However, Tunnell returned and launched a vicious attack on the guards.

Interim Police Commissioner John M. Stanford, Jr. expressed the city’s grief over the incident, particularly during the holiday season. He commended the responding officers and SEPTA police for their quick actions in apprehending the suspect.

The Macy’s store in Center City Philadelphia has encountered a significant increase in retail theft cases this year, with 250 incidents reported to the police. Despite the tragedy, the store is set to reopen on Wednesday.

Authorities credited the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA) police for their assistance in tracking down Tunnell within minutes. District Attorney Larry Krasner highlighted the extensive surveillance system in place, with over 30,000 security cameras, ensuring accountability for those committing crimes near or on SEPTA.

Tunnell, who has a history of retail theft and drug-related cases in multiple counties, is currently being held without bail. A preliminary hearing is scheduled to take place within the next two weeks.

The Philadelphia community mourns the loss of Eric Harrison and sends its thoughts and prayers to the injured security guard and their families. This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by retail establishments in combating theft and ensuring the safety of their employees.
