Russian Government Considers Expanding Exemptions for IT Specialists from Military Service

The Russian Ministry of Digital Development, Communications and Mass Media (MinCifra) is currently exploring the possibility of expanding the categories of IT specialists who can be exempted from compulsory military service. Vice Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko made this announcement during a government session in the State Duma, as reported by RIA Novosti.

Currently, IT specialists are required to have a higher education degree in order to be eligible for exemption, Chernyshenko reminded.

“The Ministry of Digital Development is currently working on expanding the category of citizens who will be eligible for exemption from compulsory military service,” Chernyshenko emphasized.

Previously, the State Duma called for medical examinations of conscripts from the age of 14.

In October, the Ministry of Digital Development requested the Ministry of Defense and the Main Military Prosecutor’s Office to conduct an investigation into the denials of exemption from compulsory military service for IT specialists.

Earlier, President Putin signed a law raising the conscription age.
