Arrest Made in Los Angeles Serial Killer Case After $700,000 Settlement

Los Angeles police have announced the arrest of a 33-year-old California man, Jerrid Powell, in connection with the killing of at least three homeless people and one additional individual. Powell, who had recently received a $700,000 settlement from the City of Santa Monica for injuries sustained during a beach patrol officer’s response to a fire, is accused of committing four murders. According to authorities, Powell was found lying in a ditch on one of the country’s most scenic beaches when the incident occurred.

The settlement stemmed from a lawsuit filed by Powell in 2020, alleging negligence in the 2019 incident. The city confirmed the settlement earlier this year. Law enforcement sources have described Powell as a “vicious” offender who allegedly used some of his settlement money to purchase a gun and car, which were used in the murders. It should be noted that Powell had a prior felony conviction and a misdemeanor theft conviction, making him ineligible to own or purchase a firearm.

The string of crimes attributed to Powell includes the shooting of three sleeping homeless men on separate occasions and a home invasion robbery that resulted in the death of a man in San Dimas. The victim of the robbery was followed home from an electric vehicle charging station in West Covina, approximately 12 miles away. Powell was apprehended by police after the murder of Nicholas Simbolon, whose body was found in his Tesla parked in his garage. The suspect’s BMW was linked to the crime, and a handgun seized from his car was allegedly matched to the other three homicides.

The Los Angeles community has been on high alert following a series of home invasion shootings. In one incident, a homeowner exchanged gunfire with an armed intruder, resulting in his concealed carry permit being revoked. Another incident involved a homeless woman breaking into a home and shooting a Hollywood activist. These cases have raised concerns about public safety and the response of law enforcement.

Jerrid Powell now faces multiple charges, including four counts of murder, robbery, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. The arrest and subsequent charges bring some relief to the Los Angeles community, which has been reeling from the recent spate of violent crimes. However, it also raises questions about the effectiveness of the criminal justice system in preventing such incidents and ensuring public safety.

The case serves as a reminder of the vulnerability of homeless individuals and the need for increased support and protection for this marginalized population. It also highlights the importance of thorough background checks and strict regulations regarding firearm ownership to prevent individuals with criminal records from obtaining weapons.

As the investigation continues, authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity. The arrest of Jerrid Powell brings some closure to the victims’ families and the affected communities, but the impact of these tragic events will be felt for a long time.
