A 47-year-old Florida mother, Pamela Gladys Gaensel, is facing child abuse charges after she was allegedly caught on a neighbor’s doorbell camera footage. The incident occurred when Gaensel was seen pulling her 6-year-old son out of the back seat of her SUV by his hair and throwing his booster seat at him. Gaensel then proceeded to slap the boy repeatedly and throw items over his head into a neighboring yard. The entire incident was witnessed by Gaensel’s two other children, aged 3 and 7, who were inside the car.
Marks and bruises corresponding to the abuse were later found on the boy’s body and face when police tracked him down at his school. Gaensel was taken into custody and appeared in Broward County Circuit Court for a bail hearing. Prosecutors presented the doorbell camera footage and stated that Gaensel had called her son an expletive during the incident. Gaensel initially claimed that she had only spanked her son for unclipping his car seat, but the security footage contradicted her statement.
The incident has raised concerns about child abuse and the safety of children in Florida. Gaensel was charged with child abuse without great bodily harm and has since been released on a $5,000 bond. She is prohibited from having any contact with her son until further notice from the state’s Department of Children and Families. The custody of her three children has been granted to their father.
The Sunrise Police Department and the Broward County State Attorney’s Office have not provided any comments on the case at this time. Gaensel and her attorney have also not been reached for immediate response.
