Detroit-area businessman Sandy Pensler has announced his second campaign for the U.S. Senate, joining a competitive field of Republican candidates in Michigan. The seat, which has been held by Democrats since 2001, is up for grabs as incumbent Democratic Senator Debbie Stabenow plans to retire at the end of next year. Pensler, who lost the GOP primary for Senate in 2018, aims to bring about change and restore what he sees as a troubled American experiment.
In a campaign video released on Friday, Pensler expressed his belief in the need for basic morals, responsibility, and a fierce determination to turn things around. He joins a crowded field of Republican contenders that includes former U.S. Representatives Mike Rogers and Peter Meijer, as well as former Detroit Police Chief James Craig.
Pensler’s previous primary bid in 2018 saw him invest millions of dollars into his campaign, only to lose to now-U.S. Representative John James. James, in turn, was defeated by incumbent Senator Stabenow. This time, Pensler is determined to secure the Republican nomination and ultimately win the Senate seat.
On the Democratic side, U.S. Representative Elissa Slotkin has emerged as a leading candidate, with actor Hill Harper also in the running. Slotkin’s campaign has gained significant financial support, with nearly $4 million more in funding than any other Senate candidate as of September.
Sandy Pensler, a successful businessman who owns Pensler Capital and The Korex Cos., brings his experience in investment and manufacturing to the race. In 2018, he personally contributed nearly $5 million to kick-start his campaign. Pensler’s campaign video emphasizes the need to reclaim the Senate from what he refers to as “the morons.”
One key factor that could sway the outcome of the Senate race is the potential endorsement of former President Donald Trump. Trump’s endorsement played a significant role in the 2018 primary, as he backed James over Pensler. Given Trump’s popularity in Michigan, his support could carry substantial weight in the upcoming election.
As the Republican candidates vie for the open Senate seat, their ultimate goal is to break the Democrats’ hold on the position, which has lasted for over two decades. Pensler’s second campaign seeks to energize voters with a message of change and a commitment to restoring the American experiment.
