Russia to Respond to Moldova’s Decision to Join Sanctions, Says Russian Foreign Ministry

Moscow, November 29 – The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that Russia will respond to Moldova’s decision to join sanctions against it. The official representative of the Ministry, Maria Zakharova, stated during a briefing that this move by Moldova is seen as yet another hostile step aimed at damaging the relationship between the two countries. She emphasized that there should be no doubt that Russia will not leave this decision unanswered.

On November 15, Moldova’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Nicu Popescu, revealed that his country had joined four sets of sanctions against Russia. He also mentioned that Moldova’s authorities are currently considering the possibility of supporting additional anti-Russian measures and assessing the potential impact on their economy.

The relationship between Russia and Moldova has been deteriorating since the election of Maya Sandu as the pro-European president in late 2020. Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Russian president, noted that Moldova is actively striving to become an unfriendly nation towards Russia. In response, Moscow has called on Chisinau to prioritize the interests of its own citizens and to refrain from obstructing the development of contacts and interregional ties.

This latest development further escalates the tensions between Russia and Moldova, as the latter aligns itself more closely with Western interests. It remains to be seen how Russia will respond and what consequences this will have on the already strained relations between the two countries.
