Russia Raises Flag on New Submarine Mozyr for Pacific Fleet

On November 28, a flag-raising ceremony will take place on the newly constructed submarine “Mozyr” in St. Petersburg, after which it will join the Pacific Fleet of the Russian Navy. This news was reported by RIA Novosti.

“The solemn ceremony of raising the Naval flag of the Russian Federation on the large diesel-electric submarine ‘Mozyr’ of the 636 project will take place on November 28, 2023, at the Admiralty Shipyards,” the publication stated.

The “Mozyr” is the fifth in a series of six submarines built for the Russian Pacific Fleet at the Admiralty Shipyards in St. Petersburg. The submarines “Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky,” “Volkhov,” “Magadan,” “Ufa,” and “Mozyr” have already been constructed, with “Yakutsk” still in progress.

The contract for their construction was signed in September 2016.

The 636 “Varshavyanka” project submarines are in service with Russia, China, Algeria, and Vietnam. The Russian variant belongs to the third generation, with a displacement of approximately 4,000 tons, a cruising speed of 18 knots, and a diving depth of up to 300 meters. It has a crew of 52 and can operate autonomously for 45 days, with a range of up to 7,500 miles. They are equipped with the “Kalibr” missile complex and torpedo launchers. Due to their stealth and difficulty in detection, NATO refers to them as the “Black Hole.”

On November 21, it was reported that the Russian military would receive three submarines with “Kalibr” missiles in 2023.

It was also announced that the nuclear submarine “Arkhangel’sk” will be launched in the near future.

Earlier, Shoigu stated that the share of modern ships in the Russian nuclear triad has reached 100%.
