A shocking report has emerged, revealing that over $4 million of taxpayer money in California was spent on gender-affirming enhancements for more than 100 inmates. Meanwhile, South Carolina is grappling with a prison corruption scandal that has led to the indictment of seven prison employees. These employees are accused of various illegal activities, including smuggling contraband, engaging in sexual affairs with inmates, and victimizing a child from within the walls of the state prisons.
South Carolina Republican Attorney General Alan Wilson expressed his commitment to bringing severe accountability for the alleged abuse. He highlighted the connection between public corruption, contraband cellphones, and the rise of violent crimes, drug trafficking, and child sex crimes against citizens.
One of the investigations, known as “Clean Sweep,” focused on Lee Correctional Institution. It uncovered a disturbing case where an inmate, Jacob Lance, allegedly used a contraband cellphone to encourage his girlfriend, Abbygale Alexandria El-Dier, to sexually abuse her young daughter and send him the footage. Lance acquired the cellphone from prison employees, shedding light on the widespread issue of contraband cellphones within the prison system.
The State reported that two Lee Correctional Institution employees were charged with facilitating the smuggling of contraband cellphones. The state is seeking a life without parole sentence for Lance, while the employees involved in the smuggling operation face legal consequences.
In addition to the Lee Correctional Institution case, two other operations, “Gatekeeper” and “Block Party,” revealed further corruption within McCormick Correctional Institution and Broad River Correctional Institution. The indictments included charges of illegal contraband trade, sexual relationships between guards and inmates, misconduct in office, money laundering, and the discovery of large quantities of drugs within the prisons.
The prevalence of contraband cellphones in South Carolina prisons has become a significant concern. These devices allow inmates to orchestrate criminal activities from behind bars, posing a serious threat to the prison system’s security and public safety.
State Corrections Director Bryan Stirling expressed his shock and emphasized the urgent need to address this issue. He recounted the tragic consequences of contraband cellphones within prisons, including the largest RICO case in state history, suicides by veterans, and even a corrections officer being shot at his own home.
