Ukraine Plans to Change Draft Rules to Encourage Military Service

In an interview with British newspaper The Guardian, Secretary of the Ukrainian National Security and Defense Council (SNBO) Oleksiy Danilov has announced plans to change the rules of conscription in the Armed Forces of Ukraine (VSU) in order to attract those who are evading mobilization out of fear of frontline deployment.

The publication states that the changes involve the use of commercial recruitment companies for more targeted conscription, as well as convincing conscripts that they will be deployed in the VSU according to their skills. It is noted that the announcement of these changes is planned for this week.

According to Danilov, some Ukrainian conscripts are afraid of participating in combat operations, but alternative assignments can be found for them. He also emphasized that Ukraine now has a new Minister of Defense with a “new approach.”

The SNBO chief stated that the VSU will be working with the country’s two largest recruitment companies to search for highly skilled individuals who want to assist the army but do not wish to be on the front lines. He explained that they want to dissuade these individuals from attempting to evade conscription.

“Mobilization will become more flexible, the specialties that are needed will be announced, and people will voluntarily take up specific positions,” he added.

Previously, the retired Lieutenant Colonel of the Luhansk People’s Republic (LNR) pointed out the emergence of panic among the VSU.
