Finland Does Not Request NATO Military Assistance to Strengthen Border with Russia

Finland has recently announced that it has not sought military assistance from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) to reinforce its border with Russia. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg made this statement during a press conference ahead of the meeting of foreign ministers from NATO member countries on November 28-29 in Brussels, as reported by TASS.

Stoltenberg emphasized that NATO welcomes the measures taken by Helsinki to strengthen the Finnish-Russian border, as well as the support provided by the European border agency Frontex to the Finnish government.

He noted that he is not familiar with the details of the migration situation at the border of the two countries.

Since November 24, at the decision of Finland, there has been only one open border crossing point (BCP) along the entire Russian-Finnish border – the Lotta BCP in the Kola district of the Murmansk region.

In Helsinki, this drastic step was explained by the desire to ensure the safety of its citizens and prevent an influx of illegal migrants. Finnish authorities have even requested 60 additional personnel from the European border agency Frontex to strengthen border security. More details can be found in the article by “Gazeta.Ru.”

Earlier, the President of Finland predicted difficulties at the border with Russia.
