Mayor Eric Adams Solicits Prayers Amidst Federal Indictment.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams visited two churches on Sunday, soliciting prayers from the congregations while refusing to resign from his position. This comes after he was arraigned on federal corruption charges on Friday. Adams has vowed not to step down, and instead claims that “I’m going to reign.
During his first visit to Emmanuel Presbyterian Reformed Church in The Bronx, Mayor Adams passionately expressed his love for Jesus before leaving without answering any questions from reporters. He stated that God placed him in this moment and urged the congregation to continue moving the city forward. No, I’m not going to resign,” he declared defiantly.
Later on, Adams visited Staten Island’s Mt. Sinai United Christian Church, where a group of clergy rallied with him and prayed for his strength during this challenging time. He told the congregants that he had been warned by clergy members that storms would arise along his journey and asked the people of the city to let him continue doing his job.
Despite Mayor Adams’ attempts to present himself as a virtuous man of God, some New Yorkers remain skeptical of his innocence in the face of allegations that he defrauded taxpayers out of $10 million in matching campaign finance funds and took bribes from Turkish officials and nationals.
Alice Dividu, a 70-year-old who saw Adams at an ARC A. Philip Randolph Older Adult Center senior center birthday celebration, was supportive of his efforts to remain in office but expressed doubt about voting for him again due to the legitimacy of the charges against him.
Throughout this ordeal, Mayor Adams has maintained the support of many prominent faith and black leaders, such as Reverend Al Sharpton. These leaders continue to publicly back him in pulpits and television broadcasts despite the unfolding legal battle.
Mayor Adams’ faith in divine intervention seems unshaken, as he told a Bronx gospel concert on Saturday that he was lifting up the congregation in prayers and asking them to lift him up in prayer as well. He emphasized his belief that there will always be a man of God leading New York City.
