Republican Vice Presidential Candidate J.D. Vance recently criticized Democratic Vice Presidential Nominee Kamala Harris for her perceived lack of substance in media interviews. During a rally in Leesport, Pennsylvania, Vance quipped that every time Harris does an interview, the Trump campaign picks up 100,000 votes.
The latest example of this phenomenon occurred during a virtual rally hosted by Oprah Winfrey on Thursday. Harris delivered a two-minute monologue that left many listeners confused, including Winfrey herself, who appeared “lost” and “unimpressed,” according to online commentators.
Harris’ speech included phrases such as, “We love our country. I love our country. I know we all do, that’s why everybody’s here right now. We love our country. We– we take pride in the privilege of being American and this is a moment where we can and must come together as Americans, understanding we have so much more in common than what separates us,” which many found to be lacking in clarity or substance.
Even Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump chimed in on Harris’ performance at the celebrity rally, calling it “a total disaster” during a speech in Wilmington, North Carolina. He also criticized her for struggling with media interviews and accused her of dodging questions.
In a softball interview with an ABC affiliate last week – her first solo media sit-down since becoming the Democratic presidential nominee – Harris again appeared to dodge questions and offered little in terms of substance. When asked about bringing prices down in the U.S., she began by discussing her middle-class upbringing before moving on to a tangent about pride in one’s lawn and providing dignity to all people.
Throughout the interview, Harris focused more on promoting policies such as giving new homeowners a $25,000 handout and offering tax breaks for new small businesses than addressing key economic issues like inflation.
