Accused Killer’s $1 Sale: Unraveling the Mystery of Rex Heuermann’s Woodland Hideaway

The notorious accused serial killer Rex Heuermann has recently sold off his secluded South Carolina property for just $1. This was the same price at which he had transferred the title of his dilapidated Long Island home to his estranged wife, Asa Ellerup, a year ago. Following this transfer, Ellerup turned around and sold the 5.34-acre plot to Heuermann’s brother Craig for $1 on August 30th.

Located about an hour south of Charlotte, North Carolina, the property at 1031 Rippling Brook Dr in Chester was purchased by Heuermann in 2021 for $154,351. The accused Gilgo Beach serial killer had planned to spend his retirement years there, living in a 1,400 square-foot white one-story home situated amidst the woods. His brother Craig, who owns several properties in the same neighborhood, reportedly mentioned that Rex would buy out everybody in the area after he retired to Chester.

The property was searched by Chester County sheriffs last summer after obtaining a warrant, resulting in the discovery of a Chevrolet Avalanche which first linked Heuermann to the murders. Real estate attorney Sergey Mekhtiyev suggests that Heuermann may have given away the South Carolina land as part of his ongoing divorce with Asa Ellerup.

As a result, Rex Heuermann is currently facing murder charges in the deaths of Megan Waterman, Melissa Barthelemy, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, Amber Lynn Costello, Jessica Taylor and Sandra Costilla. He was arrested outside his Midtown office back in 2023, and has been linked to these crimes through DNA evidence from discarded items such as a pizza box and an energy drink can belonging to his daughter.
