A massive pipeline fire erupted in suburban Houston on Monday, prompting an evacuation of residents in the surrounding neighborhoods due to the threat posed by the blaze. The fire began at 9:55 a.m. in La Porte, situated approximately 25 miles southwest of Houston, and was sending a huge plume of fire high up into the air.
KTRK-TV captured video footage showing that a park near the fire had been severely damaged by the flames, while firefighters were working to douse adjacent homes with water. Several businesses, including a Walmart, are also located close to the site of the fire.
Authorities have ordered residents in the Brookglen neighborhood area, which is situated near the fire, to evacuate immediately. La Porte city spokesperson Lee Woodward issued an email requesting that people avoid the area and adhere to law enforcement directions, with more information expected to be released as it becomes available.
The exact cause of the fire remains unknown at this time. Power lines are located near the site of the blaze, raising concerns about potential disruptions in electrical service. According to the website PowerOutage.us, there are currently nearly 1,600 customers without power in Harris County due to the fire and its aftermath.
