Guns Before Family: The Chaotic Life of a School Shooter’s Father

The Georgia high school shooter’s father is described as a chaotic tenant by their former landlord in an interview with the Independent. Colin Gray abandoned his family’s dogs and wedding photos when they were evicted from their home in 2020 but later returned to collect his guns, according to the baffled ex-landlord.

Colin Gray and his estranged wife Marcee Gray were known for being chaotic tenants before falling too far behind on rent and ultimately getting kicked out of their home. They were told they had to leave the property with their three children, including now-14-year-old suspected Apalachee High School shooter Colt Gray.

The Grays’ former landlord, who remained unidentified, claimed that the couple took a long time to vacate the rental property and left behind their two German Shepherds and several other belongings, including a golf bag, an archery set, assorted tools, and their wedding photos. The landlord tried to reunite them with their dogs but was unsuccessful in his attempts.

The wedding photos were eventually thrown away after the couple failed to respond to the landlord’s wife when she offered to return them. Only later did Colin Gray return to the house to retrieve his firearms, kicking in the door to access them. The police advised against pressing charges due to the minimal damage caused and the fact that Gray had effectively “stolen” back his property.

The ex-landlord expressed shock when he heard news of the family again earlier this week after they were mentioned in connection with the tragic school shooting at Apalachee High School, where Colt Gray allegedly murdered four people. In court on Friday, Gray, who will be tried as an adult, was warned that he faces life in prison for his actions.

On the day following the shooting, Colin Gray was arrested and charged with four counts of manslaughter, two counts of second-degree murder, and eight counts of cruelty to children. It has since been revealed that the father purchased the AR-15-style rifle Colt allegedly used in the massacre as a Christmas gift for his son last December.

Lauren Vickers, a neighbor who lived next door to the Grays in Jefferson, Georgia, said there were “problems immediately” when the family moved into their well-manicured neighborhood 60 miles east of Atlanta in 2022.
