Unprovoked Harassment: The Rising Tide of Antisemitism on New York City Subways

A shocking video uploaded by the Combat Antisemitism Movement (CAM) group on Tuesday has shown a bearded man berating a Jewish student wearing a yarmulke on a New York City subway car. The man, who has yet to be identified, loudly called the visibly Jewish student a “rapist,” “genocider” and blamed him for the deaths in Gaza. The harasser continued his tirade by calling the student a “Zionist”, a “fake f–king Jew” and the “United States’ bully boy.

The harrowing encounter took place on a 1 train near 96th Street, while other commuters largely ignored the disturbing scene. CAM stated that the man’s rant was unprovoked and only occurred after he spotted the visibly Jewish student. Liora Rez, the founder of the StopAntisemitism nonprofit group, said that this incident is indicative of a surge in antisemitic incidents across the city since the start of the war in Gaza.

Rez called on Mayor Eric Adams and New York City officials to crack down on the increasing antisemitism plaguing the city. She emphasized that Jewish students should be able to ride public transit without facing harassment or threats. Jewisch activist Lizzy Savetsky also condemned the man who berated the student, saying that “the more we allow these incidents to happen, the worse it’s going to get.

The subway incident follows the discovery of antisemitic graffiti in Central Park by city cops. The hateful message read, “Zionism weaponized Jewish Trauma,” “Whild you graduate, there are no universities left in Gaza,” and, “Israel would bomb your Hospitals too.” This rise in antisemitic incidents has raised concerns about the safety of Jewish individuals across the city.
