Former President Donald Trump has stated his opposition to an amendment on Florida’s ballot for November which seeks to guarantee the right to abortion before viability and could potentially overturn the state’s six-week ban. During an NBC News interview, Trump said that a six-week ban is “too short,” while he also expressed disapproval of a law allowing abortions up until birth. His stance was later clarified by his campaign team, emphasizing that he believes the six-week ban is too short and the measure is radical in nature.
The proposed amendment seeks to “limit government interference with abortion” and aims to overturn Florida’s current six-week ban on the procedure. The Epoch Times reports that if passed, it would ensure no law prohibits or delays an abortion before viability or when necessary to protect a patient’s health as determined by their healthcare provider. However, it would not change the constitutional authority of the state legislature to require notification from a minor seeking an abortion to their parent or guardian.
Former President Trump also declined to commit to vetoing a federal abortion ban if elected. He argued that states are handling this issue effectively and there is no need for federal intervention. Trump has taken credit for returning power to make abortion laws to the states through his Supreme Court appointments, stating that he was able to fulfill the wishes of people who wanted the matter handled at the state level.
Reproductive issues have been a significant topic during this election cycle, with both parties emphasizing their stance on various procedures. Former President Trump has even pledged to offer free in vitro fertilization (IVF) to women in the United States, with details of the plan set to be announced shortly. He stated that his administration plans to fund or require insurance companies to cover IVF, making it more accessible for Americans.
