Rising Crime Woes: Jackson Heights Stalls on Prostitutes & Shoplifters

The problematic stretch of Roosevelt Avenue near 91st Street in Queens has only worsened since The Post highlighted the issue nearly five months ago, with locals reporting twice as many sex workers and brazen shoplifters threatening violence when caught. The area, known for its illegal open-air migrant market, now sees an increased number of prostitutes, who have doubled over recent months, much to the frustration of local merchants.

Merchants and residents alike complain that despite their efforts, the police are not doing enough to address the issue. Stolen goods, including power tools and mouthwash, can be purchased at discounted prices from sidewalk vendors. As for sex workers, they approach potential clients while strolling by and set up temporary brothels within local apartments when they secure a customer.

A jewelry store owner in the area lamented that there are too many prostitutes near her shop, blocking the entrance and making it difficult for customers to access the business. She confirmed the presence of two brothels in close proximity to her store.

When The Post initially reported on this issue back in April, residents and business owners expressed their concerns about migrants stealing from stores and then selling those stolen goods on the sidewalks outside. Despite occasional police sweeps, the problem persists, with the number of prostitutes doubling within the last two months. Locals feel that the situation is only getting worse, as criminals seem to be gaining a sense of community in Jackson Heights.

A worker from a nearby cellphone store said that they were fuming when The Post returned for a second look in July, expressing frustration with the lack of police intervention and the escalating crime in the area. Mi Pharmacia pharmacist Jenny Leal explained that people avoid her pharmacy due to the presence of over 50 illegal vendors along the block. She noted that while the police do perform occasional sweeps, the problem returns shortly afterward.

Neighborhood resident Bill expressed his disappointment in the situation and acknowledged that it seems unlikely to improve anytime soon. Despite going to the precinct, he feels that the police are simply outnumbered and unable to effectively address the issue.
