Tragedy strikes on Thursday when Ruben Rodriguez and Juliana Rodriguez-Plata, a newlywed couple on their way to their honeymoon, were tragically killed along with the bride’s mother, Luz Melba Martinez. The trio, as well as the couple’s 1-year-old son Danny and the bride’s father Carlos Joaquin Plata, were involved in a catastrophic accident on Interstate 70 near Denver, Colorado.
The incident occurred shortly before 8:30 a.m., when the semi-truck carrying large plastic tubes overturned, spilling its cargo across both the eastbound and westbound lanes. The heavy tubes weighed in at 500 pounds each and caused significant damage to multiple vehicles. At least six cars were struck by the debris, including the vehicle that held Ruben, Juliana, their son, and Juliana’s parents.
Following the accident, Ruben, Juliana, and Luz Melba Martinez succumbed to their injuries. Carlos Joaquin Plata and young Danny were rushed to the hospital for treatment of their injuries. The driver of the semi-truck was also admitted to a medical facility.
The Rodriguez family had been looking forward to a honeymoon in the mountains, with both sets of parents attending from afar – Juliana’s parents had traveled all the way from Colombia for the joyous occasion. The newlyweds were celebrating just four days after their wedding when tragedy struck.
The Rodriguez family was not alone in their grief; multiple cars were involved in the accident, with at least six vehicles struck by debris. In a heartbreaking statement given to local outlet Denver 7, Ruben’s sister-in-law Janell Rodriguez spoke about the pain and devastation the family was experiencing, emphasizing that they are all trying to remain strong together during this unimaginably difficult time.
Currently, law enforcement officers are investigating the circumstances leading up to the accident. They are also collaborating with local prosecutors to determine whether any criminal charges may be brought against the parties involved. The debris field resulting from the semi-truck’s cargo spanned more than two football fields in length, which could potentially delay the investigation.
