Wisconsin Swing: Kamala and Trump Nearly Neck-and-Neck in Favorability

BETHLEHEM, Pa. The latest Marquette Law School poll reveals that Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are in a virtual tie for favorability among Wisconsin voters, one of the nation’s key swing states. Conducted during the last week of July and released on Wednesday, the poll surveyed 877 Wisconsinites and categorized them into “registered” and “likely” voters.

Among registered voters, Trump held a slim lead over Harris with a 1-point margin, 50% to 49. The Post spoke with various attendees at Kamala Harris’ rally who expressed their excitement about seeing the new Democratic ticket in action.

In contrast, among likely voters, the results shifted, with Harris taking a narrow lead over Trump by the same 1-point margin, 50% to 49. This poll’s release coincided with Vice President Kamala Harris campaigning alongside newly selected running mate Tim Walz in Eau Claire, a city of nearly 70,000 residents in western Wisconsin.

Simultaneously, Trump’s running mate, JD Vance, visited the same city on Wednesday to take questions from reporters. Cheryl Duerst, 68, of Madison shared her enthusiasm for the new Democratic ticket and expressed her excitement about attending the rally with Tim Walz in Eau Claire.

I am excited about the new ticket that’s upcoming for president, and I’m here to support the ticket,” said Duerst, who wanted to hear what Walz had to say during the event.

Elaina Plonis, a University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire student, told The Post she attended the rally “for the experience” and shared her excitement about attending her first political event as a young voter.

I’ve never been to something like this before, and I thought it would be a good experience for me as a young voter just to get out and see what this is all about,” said Plonis, 20.

The Marquette Law School poll highlights the growing enthusiasm among Wisconsin voters, which has only increased since President Biden suspended his re-election campaign nearly three weeks ago. According to the poll, 61% of all surveyed voters now express anticipation for voting this year, a significant increase from last month when only 46% of voters felt the same way. This shift can be attributed, in part, to Democrats who were concerned that Biden would lose to Trump in the upcoming election.
