New $125M US Aid Bolsters Ukrainian Counter-Offensive; Trump’s Peace Deal Concerns

Washington D.C. The Biden administration has announced a new allocation of $125 million in US military aid for Ukraine as Ukrainian troops continue their deep advance into Russian territory as part of an impressive four-day counter-offensive. This latest support comes from congressionally authorized funds and is comprised of a range of key equipment, including air defense interceptors, munitions for rocket systems and artillery, multi-mission radars, and anti-tank weapons.

Despite the significant strides made by Ukrainian forces in recent days, the US government has been cautious about commenting on specific military operations. White House spokesman John Kirby, who is responsible for foreign affairs issues, stated that he would not provide further details but instead allow Ukraine to comment on their military actions.

The current counter-offensive in Ukraine presents a challenging situation for the US policy in the conflict, as former President Donald Trump, the Republican nominee for the November 5 election, pledges to personally broker a peace deal should he secure victory. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed concerns that any such agreement could force Kyiv to cede Russian-occupied regions of southern and eastern Ukraine.

The counter-attack is a significant embarrassment for Russian President Vladimir Putin, who was unable to secure his nation’s western border in June 2023 when Kremlin-backed mercenary leader Yevgeny Prigozhin left the battlefield with thousands of his men and marched on Moscow. The advance could also give Kyiv leverage in negotiations aimed at ending the ongoing conflict, which began with the ousting of Ukraine’s pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych in 2014 and escalated into open warfare in February 2022 when Russia directly invaded and attempted to capture Kyiv.

In April, Congress approved $60.8 billion in aid for Ukraine to resist the Russian invasion, adding to the $113 billion already appropriated earlier in the conflict. The new security package will be funded from that allocation and sourced from Pentagon stockpiles. Former President Trump, who is running against Vice President Kamala Harris in the election, has criticized the scale of assistance provided by President Biden and claimed that he mismanaged the conflict. However, his stance has become more sympathetic recently, expressing sympathy for the plight of the war-torn nation during a Monday interview with streamer Adin Ross.
