McClelland’s Criticism Ignites Party Squabbles: A VP Nomination Dilemma

In a recent development, Erin McClelland, a Democrat running for office in Pennsylvania, has publicly criticized her party mate and Governor, Josh Shapiro. McClelland took to Twitter to express her concerns about potential Vice-Presidential nominee, Shapiro’s perceived sexism and alleged cover-up of sexual harassment incidents. Her comments sparked a war of words with Pennsylvania Democratic Party Chief, Sharif Street.

McClelland’s tweet suggests that she believes Shapiro wouldn’t be satisfied playing second fiddle in the event he is added to the ticket and that his ambitions for the presidency may undermine the president. She also indirectly accused him of covering up sexual harassment incidents, possibly referring to a 2021 scandal involving Mike Vereb, Shapiro’s legislative liaison, who was accused of sexual harassment.

McClelland’s comments have placed her at odds with other Pennsylvania Democrats who support Shapiro for Vice President, including the state Democratic Party Chairman Sharif Street. Despite this, McClelland maintains that she will support the Democratic ticket no matter who Kamala Harris picks as her running mate but voiced particular admiration for North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, who has been touted as a potential VP pick for Harris.

McClelland’s stance echoes those of 28 anti-school-choice organizations that oppose Shapiro’s candidacy and have penned a letter to Kamala Harris urging her to choose one of three other Democratic governors as her running mate, including Governor Roy Cooper.
