Democratic fundraiser John Morgan announced he would not be raising money for Vice President Kamala Harris, who has been backed by President Joe Biden for the Democratic candidacy following his departure from the contest. In a statement on X, Morgan wrote that he did not believe in her political appointment and was neither enthusiastic nor hopeful about it. Instead, he expressed his support for West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin (D) or Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear (D. Morgan’s decision may signify division among Democrats regarding Harris’ potential to lead the party.
In a separate statement to The Hill, Morgan predicted that Harris would lose in November to former President Donald Trump, stating that she was not his first choice but acknowledging that it was a done deal. Biden’s decision to exit the 2024 race on Sunday surprised Harris, according to CNN’s Jamie Gangel. Even as late as Friday night, the president had made no secret of his plan to remain in the race; however, by Saturday, he allegedly changed his mind.
As part of her bid for the presidency, Harris is examining a list of potential running partners, according to CNN reporter Jamie Gangel. One name on the list is Senator Mark Kelly (D-AZ), who she reportedly likes a lot. Other candidates include Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, and North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper.
Since Biden endorsed Harris on Sunday, her presidential campaign has raised nearly $50 million in donations. The Harris campaign stated that the number reflects community contributions made by “all entities, including ActBlue.” Following Biden’s announcement on Sunday afternoon that he would withdraw from the 2024 race due to pressure from the Democratic Party, Harris declared her presidential campaign and received Biden’s full support and endorsement.
