Most of these calls come from Republican representatives who argue that the president’s apparent deterioration poses a threat to national security. Some critics also question when key figures close to Biden, such as Vice President Kamala Harris, became aware of his condition and why they did not address it publicly or through invoking the 25th Amendment.
Leading up to Biden’s announcement, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) demanded the president step down if he were to abandon his reelection bid. In a tweet, he stated that if Biden is not running for reelection, it would confirm former President Donald Trump’s assertion that he was not mentally fit to serve as Commander-in-Chief and left no room for ambiguity. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) also urged the president to resign immediately after his announcement.
If corrupt Joe Biden is not fit to run for President, he is not fit to serve as President. He must resign the office immediately,” Johnson declared on social media.
House No. 3 Republican, Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), also called for Biden’s resignation. She accused the Democratic Party of a “blatantly corrupt and desperate attempt” to cover up Biden’s unfitness for office. Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) echoed this sentiment: “Then RESIGN your office. If you can’t run a mere political campaign, you can’t be President.
Sen. Steve Daines (R-Mont.) expressed his lack of confidence in Biden’s ability to perform as Commander-in-Chief and emphasized the importance of having a president who can handle the demanding responsibilities of the office. Savannah Viar, deputy communications director for the National Republican Congressional Committee, also weighed in on the matter: “corrupt Democrats can’t have it both ways. If corrupt Joe Biden can’t handle a debate or a rally, he can’t stand up to Putin or have access to the nuclear codes.
In addition to concerns about his mental capacity, critics argue that Biden’s decision to endorse Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee raises further questions about the president’s motives. Notably, some prominent Democratic donors have declared their refusal to support the party financially if Harris were to become the nominee due to her far-left stance on various issues.
