Matschie’s Marvel: Bronx Zoo Celebrates New Endangered Tree Kangaroo Joey

A rare Matschie’s tree kangaroo has finally emerged from its mother’s pouch in December 2021 at the Bronx Zoo, marking a significant milestone for this endangered species. This particular tree kangaroo, which is now visible to visitors in the zoo’s JungleWorld exhibit, was born as small as a jellybean and spent most of its time developing physically within the mother’s pouch. Joeys do not emerge from the pouch until they are about seven months old, at which point they begin to explore their surroundings while still returning to the pouch frequently for nursing.

This particular tree kangaroo joey is the second born in the Bronx Zoo and to this specific female since 2021. This species, native to Papua New Guinea and the Huon Peninsula, has been considered endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) since 1996. According to IUCN estimates, there are only about 2,500 Matschie’s tree kangaroos left in the wild.

The recent birth of a Matschie’s tree kangaroo joey at San Diego Zoo Safari Park in August 2022 marked another milestone for this species. This was the second time that the species had been successfully born at the park, highlighting the importance of conservation efforts and breeding programs to ensure their survival.

The Matschie’s tree kangaroo, with its unique appearance and endangered status, is a fascinating addition to the Bronx Zoo’s collection, providing visitors with a rare opportunity to witness this elusive species up close. As more zoos contribute to conservation efforts, there is hope for the continued survival of this extraordinary animal in both captivity and the wild.
