In a recent turnaround, Utah Governor Spencer Cox has publicly endorsed former President Donald Trump’s candidacy for the upcoming presidential election. This decision comes after an assassination attempt during a rally in Pennsylvania last week, which only solidified Cox’s support for Trump. Despite previously stating his refusal to vote for either Trump or President Joe Biden earlier this month, Cox has since changed his stance and is now actively supporting Trump’s campaign.
In the letter obtained by POLITICO, Governor Cox expressed his belief that Trump’s life was spared due to a “miracle” during the assassination attempt. He went on to write that only Trump could unify the country and expressed support for many of the former president’s policies. While acknowledging differences between them, Cox stated that he will do everything in his power to help Trump win the presidency again and contribute to the success of the Republican Party.
This change of heart coincides with President Biden’s announcement that he is getting back on the campaign trail next week after recovering from COVID-19. Biden intends to continue exposing the threat posed by Donald Trump’s Project 2025 agenda while making the case for his own record and vision for America, which includes saving democracy, protecting rights and freedoms, and creating opportunity for everyone.
The president’s decision comes amidst some calls from within his party to have him step aside as the nominee in favor of a younger candidate, such as Vice President Kamala Harris. However, not all Democrats are pushing for Biden to drop out, with Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez being one such supporter. In a recent Instagram live video, she criticized anonymous Democrats who were resigned to the idea of Trump becoming president again and argued that these same people also do not support Kamala Harris as a potential nominee.
