Former White House official Steve Bannon is set to report to federal prison next week after being denied by the Supreme Court in his bid to remain free. In a brief order with no dissents noted, the high court stated that “the application for release pending appeal presented to The Chief Justice and by him referred to the Court is denied.
Bannon, 70 years old, was convicted nearly two years ago of two counts of contempt of Congress for refusing to sit for a deposition with the House panel investigating the January 6th riot at the Capitol and for failing to provide documents to the Democrat-led select committee. He received a four-month prison sentence and is due to report to prison by July 1.
Steve Bannon will serve his time at a low-security federal prison in Danbury, Connecticut. In June, a three-judge panel upheld Bannon’s conviction from July 2022. Last week, DC US District Judge Carl Nichols ordered the former president’s ally to begin serving his jail sentence.
Bannon is not the only White House aide from the Trump administration who will serve prison time in connection with defying a subpoena from the House January 6th committee. Former Trump trade adviser Peter Navarro began serving his four-month sentence in March after his petition to the Supreme Court was rejected as well.
Despite being fired by Trump less than a year into his administration, Bannon later reconciled with the former president, and both made allegations that the 2020 election was stolen. However, President Trump pardoned Bannon just before leaving office on January 20th, 2021, for federal fraud and money laundering charges related to a private fundraiser his former chief strategist had organized, supposedly to fund construction of the US-Mexico border wall.
