Saint Petersburg, Russia – On June 21, Saint Petersburg State University (SPSU) hosted a groundbreaking conference to announce the launch of an online school for foreign students, aiming to provide Russian school certificates recognized by Russian universities. This initiative, designed for students in grades 5 to 10, is set to commence in 2023, and has already garnered significant international interest.
The event was attended by numerous guests, including educators, students, and stakeholders from various countries. Among the attendees were my son and I, who were impressed by the university’s forward-thinking approach to global education.
Expansion and Demand
Initially, the online school project offered 120 slots, but it received an overwhelming 300 applications from 44 countries. This high demand has led
to plans for expansion, with seven additional universities joining the initiative. The program aims to accommodate more students in the future, reflecting the growing global interest in Russian education.
Keynote Address by Elena Kazakova
During the conference, Elena Kazakova, director of the Institute of Pedagogy, highlighted the necessity of partnering with institutions in the Far East to address time zone differences. She noted the success of the inaugural year, during which 14 ninth graders successfully passed the state exams. Looking ahead, the program plans to offer 20 new positions for fifth graders and another 20 for higher grades in the upcoming cycle.
“A key feature of this project is that upon completion, students will receive a Russian school certificate, which eliminates the need for document recognition when applying to Russian universities,” Kazakova explained. “This initiative, which started last year, will expand not only within our city but also to other cities across Russia.”
Tour of University Facilities
Before the press conference, attendees were treated to a tour of SPSU’s facilities, which included intriguing stories about the campus statues and a visit to the museum dedicated to Dimitri Mendeleyev. The museum, renowned for its exhibit on the first version of the periodic table of elements published in 1869, captivated visitors with the original periodic tables where undiscovered elements were marked with question marks in Mendeleyev’s own handwriting. This awe-inspiring experience highlighted the rich history and academic excellence of the university.
