Trump’s SCOTUS Push Ahead of Jail Time

Former President Donald Trump has called on the Supreme Court to intervene in his New York City hush money trial, as he faces sentencing in July for 34 felony counts. This comes amid anticipation that the Republican National Convention may formally nominate Trump for president just days before his sentencing. The former president criticized Judge Juan Merchan and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg (D), accusing them of making decisions that will determine the future of the nation. Trump’s conviction on all counts of falsifying business records to hide alleged affairs during his 2016 campaign could result in jail time, although first-time offenders are rarely incarcerated. Trump is expected to appeal the guilty verdict.

In a separate case, legal analyst Elie Honig believes that special counsel Jack Smith should be “very worried” about the classified documents case against Trump. U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon reprimanded Smith in a three-page order and denied Trump’s request to have the case dismissed because the Presidential Records Act should protect him. This ruling may prevent Smith from appealing for Cannon’s removal from the case.
